AROUND TOWN
Black History Month Celebrations
Here are some ways to celebrate Black History Month around Flagstaff!

🧾Read compelling stories about historic Southside Flagstaff and the influential Black citizens there. You can see some of their portraits on the side of the Murdoch Community Center. The community center is housed at the site of Dunbar School, formerly a segregated elementary school. It’s named in honor of Ms. Cleo Murdoch, who was the full-time principal and teacher for the Dunbar School from 1926 until 1940.
🖼 Head to the Museum of Northern Arizona to see Debra Edgerton's artwork. “Inspired by the freshwater ecosystems of the Colorado Plateau, the artist's "Life Extended" series took a striking turn when she observed a Cymbella diatom under a microscope—its shape resembling diagrams of slave ships. This moment of discovery led her to explore the deep connections between social and ecological relationships.” February 1st - May 4th at Museum of Northern Arizona
🎷 Take in the Black History Month Jazz Concert presented by Southside Community Association and The Interference Series. Enjoy live jazz on Saturday, February 8th, at 4:30 PM, $5, or students PWYC, at Murdoch Community Center.
🎬 Go for Dinner and a Movie at Hal Jensen Rec Center. On Thursday, February 20th, the center will be showing the film "The Hate You Give" and serving some traditional soul food. Following the film, there will be time for open discussion. FREE event and open to the public. February 20th, 2:30 - 5 PM at Hal Jansen Recreation Center
